Introductory Video Game Design Workshop

for 5th-12th Graders
Do you have a teen who’s all about the video games – not just playing them, but wanting to know the ins and outs of how to create them? Professionals from eLine Media are offering a Video Game Design Workshop in Billings Public Library’s Community Room this Thursday, February 5. Instructors will teach the beginning elements of video game design, showing students how to make their own video games and how to use Gamestar Mechanic, an online video game design program. At the close of the workshop participants will be given a premium membership to Gamestar Mechanic!
The library will provide laptops for the event, but participants may bring their own. The workshop is free, but registration is required. Call 657-8258 or pop by the library’s second floor reference desk. Teens will also be encouraged to enter the STEAM Youth Game Design Competition following the workshop!

With the temperatures expecting to rebound after a few snowy days this week, you’ll definitely want to head into Downtown Billings for the Winter ArtWalk. Billings ArtWalk provides a unique opportunity to see artwork in a variety of mediums as member galleries plan and organize free receptions for ArtWalkers, allowing them to meet the artists and visit their spaces designed to display art. R.E.A.D. to a Dog

Bring the kiddos out for an opportunity to R.E.A.D. to a dog! Held in the Library’s Story Tower, interested children will be able to sign up the day of to read to a dog for 10-15 minutes. With up to four dogs participating, there are a limited number of spots in the hour. This program offers wonderful opportunities for kiddos who like to read or who have some struggles with reading or who just like to be with dogs! It’s a chance for these kids to read freely without judgment, with the calming comforts of a dog.
The R.E.A.D. to a Dog program is an affiliate program of Reading Education Assistance Dogs® which is part of Inter-mountain Therapy Animals of Salt Lake City, Utah. This program is possible with funding through the Otto and Yvonne Mansfield Endowment for Pet Therapy at St. Vincent Healthcare Foundation and the Billings Public Library Foundation.

Billings Symphony Orchestra & Chorale invites you to get into the Valentine’s Day spirit with Symphonic Fantasy at Alberta Bair Theater this Saturday, February 7. The evening will include Rising Star Rosie Weiss, the only Montanan to be selected for the National Youth Orchestra, will transport the audience to the beautiful lands of Scotland during Max Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy. Hear lush, romantic melodies and Scottish fiddle influences in this well-known violin showpiece. Also on the program is Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, this piece is full of emotion and was featured on the epic movie Master and Commander. Concluding the concert is Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks by the great Richard Strauss, chronicling the misadventures and pranks of the folk hero, Till Eulenspiegel. The audience will love how music and drama unite to tell this beloved story.
FYI, Concert Cues begin at 6:45pm – Marvin Granger will be talking with Ms. Weiss, giving you more information on the music and this outstanding musician.
